Photos of Port Richmond, Philadelphia, USA

When I was laid off back in 2002, I took a few days from searching for a new job, and went around and took several photos of places in Port Richmond. I'm glad I did this, because some of the places have changed, and now that I no longer live there, they are not as common place as they used to be.

Please enjoy.

Updated: May 2008, did a few updates on some of the pictures, how things have changed. No longer living in Port Richmond, I may do a new picture blog on where I live now. Just have to get a few pictures together.

Wow, as someone who grew up in the area and moved away 20+ years ago I'm seeing a lot of familiar places. And I'm seeing places where I can say 'I remember what was there before that'.

WOW! The pictures turned out great! I am still living in the same house, where I grew up, in Port Richmond. You captured the true essence of our Polish ethnic neighborhood, where we still take pride in where we live. I would love to see more photos added.

This is great! I grew up on Almond and Allegheny - with family still in the area. I moved out in 2004 and in such a short time A LOT has changed! Does anyone remember Tony's Pizza on Belgrade street- I know they are still opened with the same sticky floors! How about the old Candy store on Gaul and Allegheny? It turned into an Allstate office - what a bummer, I lost so much money to that place!

Or the old funeral home on Clearfield and belgrade (across from the old P.A.L.)- its now a PIZZA place.... thats kinda werid!

And the PIZZA STORE and water ice place being the gas station/wawa?! before it turned into ANOTHER chinese takeout! :-(

So many great memories growing up there! Running around the hood with flashlights playing tag in the middle of the street - hinding behind cars.... How safe we were! A long ago before cell phones when kids still used to play outside... last time I saw that I was about 12, right around the same time the Monkiewicz Playground filled up the walk through! I am old. :-)

Christopher, thanks for the post. Yes, a lot has changed. I've moved away and very rarely even drive through Port Richmond these days. Still have a Dr in the neighborhood that I visit. My oldest son was supposed to go to AMY5, but because of segregation rules, he was forced to go to Conwell. Nativity is now a retirement home, there is only 1 Catholic Grade School in the neighborhood. I can remember when they built the strip mall at Ontario and Aramingo. It was all a slaughter yard (I think).

Thank you for taking these pictures. I went to Nativity from 1965-1971 then we moved to Florida. I remember all 4 Catholic Schools that were open at the time. I have wonderful memories from my time there and in Philly.

Anne, I'm glad you enjoyed the photos. I went to Nativity from 68 to 76. Unfortunately, I think there is only one Catholic school open now. They all merged a few years ago.

Thanks for leaving a comment, SlimJim. My oldest son was born there as well. It is an outpatient place now. Been there a few times recently getting X-Rays, CT Scans, etc. They have made it very nice, and I’m glad its still being used.
